Here's an old rule of thumb I learned way back when I had a '64 Chevy...
Smaller gap = better high RPM/high cylinder pressure performance
Larger gap = better idle as a larger spark kernel is exposed
All other things being equal, best all around performance is achieved with the largest possible gap that does not cause missing at high RPM/high cylinder pressures.
Without the worry of breaking the DI I would definitely run the largest possible gap.
