There is not one spark-plug manufacturer in the world who will sell you plugs pre-gapped to a specific measurement. Not one. They tell you so in the very fine print (you have to go find it, it's not provided). That's why plugs are not better protected in transit. You MUST gap each and every new plug to the specifications for the given application. Every time.
NEVER tap the upper electrode. You will create cracks in the ceramic portion of the plug. Ease the electrode into position with gentle pressure only. Be VERY, VERY careful of the ceramics. Did you know that good race-mechanics NEVER touch a spark-plug. They use plug-holders which are plug-sockets with a rubber insert. They cost very little. Always gap the plug to the original specs, it's the best way to get original performance. If you want to experiment with different gap-settings, use a new set of plugs. Adjust them once only, if they don't give you what you want, go get another set and try again. Plugs are precision-made and they are VERY delicate. Treat them thus and you will be rewarded.
