... the Aero when it was standard. I think the indication so far is that a larger gap gives smoother running up to a certain boost pressure, when the DI starts to have problems firing such a big gap. This then becomes the limiting factor. I bought my CSE 2.0LPT a few hundred miles ago and it is just coming due a service (full Saab service history so far). Not having had time to do anything significant to it at all, I checked the plug gaps and they were about 1.4mm. I re-gapped them and will be replacing them in the next week or two when I service it. The car was running fine, though. I'll have to look at the service schedule to see when Saab would last have replaced the plugs. Since they're so cheap, I change them every 12K miles. The Aero ones were changed after only 6K miles this time round, for the aforementioned experiment.
I'll be happy to use a 1.0-1.1mm gap on the CSE. It's not as if it produces enough boost to give the DI a hard time. Then again, it's probably worth me experimenting with this one too. In fact, I might spend the money on a baseline dyno session for it and repeat the experiment while I'm there. I suspect, though, that the larger gaps are only helpful at light loads when trying to ignite a small charge at very low pressure. I'm told wide plug gaps are often specified to keep emissions down, and that the Ford Zetec engine (do you get that in Fords in the US?) has a massive plug gap (1.6mm or something) and a really beefy ignition system to fire it, probably because they had trouble meeting emissions regulations.
