Or, ar least, it's possible, you only have to change EVERYTHING in the engine, maybe only the block could be used. Diesel and gas engines have just in common the shape, roughly.
I also comfirm that the drivability isn' great at all, the engine revs right only between 1500 and 4000, how can you have fun with it? They're just engines for farming tractors..
As LesH said, Golf diesels and gas engines are two separated projects, with nothing in common except the number of cylinders.
Buy another 9000, NT, don't be tempted by those diesels! The only reason for them to be diffused here in Europe is fuel cost, but you Americans don't have this problem, believe me. We europeans all wish to drive gas engines.
Anyway, NOx emissions of diesels are awful. They could not pass an inspection in your country. Here diesels have different limits, so they are "kept in life" by laws, that allows them to produce tons of NOx.
