The whole engine needs to be designed to much stronger standards to take the high compression ratios used (better than 20:1) plus the air intake, ignition, exhaust, and fuel delivery systems are completely different. Then you would be left with inappropriate transmission and differential ratios to match the new powerband ( from 1000 to 4000 RPM instead of 1500 to 6000 RPM ).
Not a trivial job. You could try converting an existing engine - GM did it at one time, converted the Oldsmobile 350 V8 to a diesel - ask any mechanic how troublesome they are (if you can find any running).
You'd be much further ahead finding an existing high tech European diesel powertrain and transplanting it. The Golf diesel isn't the same engine as the Golf gas engine. Once you have a diesel though it's easy to run it on french fry oil - a diesel will burn pretty much anything.
