This is from reading, not doing it, so you will hopefully get other opinions and more info from others. First thing to do is change the fluid, looking on the magnet for bits of junk. Assuming there isn't any of that, run it for a bit then change the fluid again because you won't drain all of the old stuff out (it can be flushed by the dealer, independent, whatever). But if you have metal filings in the fluid and the fluid is really gunky and/or burnt, you may well need a rebuild or exchange transmission. First stop for this seems to be Ericksons (if you are US based) though I'm sure your dealer would be delighted to gift-wrap a shiny new tranny for you.
Is the rattling sound at idle from the transmission or somewhere else?
