Sludge? Oil-changer's fault

With all due respect to your mechanic's opinion, all I can say is "Bollocks!" Anyone who considers him/herself anything other than a half-arsed mechanic will drop the sump when dealing with any motor with over 50k miles on it. Despite all the detergents and particle-suspension additives that are put into modern oils, crap DOES build-up in the sump-pan. The very first symptom is that no oil comes out when you open the sump drain-plug. It's blocked with sludge!!
Sludge builds-up in the bottom of the engine, not the top, nor in any of the upper oil-galleries. If sludge has been given as the root-cause of any engine problems, ask your mechanic why you have sludge in the first place!
