The sump screen on the old 900 with auto tranny is not really a screen but more of a graveltrap. The holes are about 1/8 in size.
The mesh screen on the stick shift is pretty generous too.
The cat can and will be pretty hot, and I don't really know how much the heat sheild protects upwards. But you would think that the "engineers" have thought about all those aspects long before the car hits the road and that, not all of the calculation are based on the cold Swedish climate.
