are statistically averaged results and then there is Murphy's Law. He wins when its your car and your need of it is high. Have the alternator checked, todays diag tools available to shops can tell alot with it in the car. A good shop or supply store can tell you condition of regulation, alt. output, pass/fail of the rectifiers. Mine is gonna kiss 200,000 very soon and a few birthday presents will be installed; a new reg/brush set is one of them.
The diff in older/newer voltages at start has to do with how the measurement circuit was set up to sample the dip in voltage. For sure get a meter with a min/max readout, clamp it to battery and test. This will give you a reference to drive by. As Ari states, the battery is done after it starts the car. An older glazed belt can let alternator slip some, its a not expensive test and it is a limited life item. Reg brushes can be wearing out..... Let us know
