It probably is the Voltage Regulator. As Lu states, component reliability is statistical only. However, the probability of an electrical failure goes up exponentially (1) when garages are closed, (2) it's late at night and cold, and (3) you really have to get home and pee.
Voltage regulators don't heal with time. Actually, it's probably not the VR, but the brushes built into the VR. Either way, do yourself a favor and find the time to replace it. It's much nicer to replace a part at your own convienence, rather than late on a cold night, with all the garages closed, and you have to, well, you know.
