Hi,
First, I do ampathize with your situation; it seems that we spend all of our youth learning the workings of a car only togrow up and have the car full of electonics that don't make a noise or a smell when they brake.
As for your problem, the best situation would be if your car did this again (broke) right on the driveway, this way you can measure and observe the syptoms. The CPS can break, but most likely the connectors or the wires are corroded/damaged. As you know the CPS is behind the crank pulley, there is a metal cover with crude cut out "teeths" that the sensor uses to "sense" the position of the crank. Theoraticly, that cover can loosen. I don't think you have to remove the pulley to figure that out, a simple reaching behind it and wiggling will do. If you do remove the pulley you can obviously get a better look.
Also, you say that the DI is replaced, so perhaps that is not the problem?
I would check the connection on the harness (both at DI and at ECU).
Finally, is it possible that the ecu is faulty? It would be ideal if you could switch with someone else's. As for needle, I am told that if tahc doesn't move during crank, then it is the CPS. My friend Kyle, destroyed his CPS (or was it my fault?!) because after a huge job that we did everything was good but we forgot to tighten down that metal cover that the CPS "senses" and it mangled the CPS. We found many at Rum's garage in Orange, MA.
Hope this helps,
Roman
