Oil usually goes in somewhat clear. After running a bit, it turns dark.
Most non-synthetic oil turns dark when it gets hot. That's just part of the chemical changes that oil goes through when it gets hot. Yes, oil can get dark from dirt or particles in the oil.
When oil engineers design oil, they do a bunch of things to maintain lubricity, viscosity, and other important parameters. Color isn't important to maintain.
You want to be sure? At your next oil change, save off a quart in a clear glass jar and seal it. Let it sit in the garage for a few weeks. Yes, weeks. If the oil turns back to somewhat clear with a bunch of sludge at the bottom, then you've got sludge in your engine. But I bet I'll be the same color as you drained it.
I don't worry about the color of oil, not unless it turns blue.
