I would guess that the water pump is fine. If the pump is not leaking coolant, what you saw was either a pulley failure that caused the belt to slip off or a bad tensioner that caused the belt to slip off. Also, check the belt carefully. It may not be in as good a shape as you think.
I am afraid that you may have much larger problems as a result of your wife driving the car while in an overheated condition. Driving the car for 5 to 10 minutes without coolant flow is a good prescription for a head gasket failure and possible warping of the head. Check for the presence of antifreeze in the oil, and have the cooling system pressure tested.
