Pressure cap tester Posted by Gene N [Email] (#1094) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gene N) on Wed, 12 Feb 2003 09:15:59 In Reply to: So Gene, Bert K, Wed, 12 Feb 2003 08:31:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A commercially available pressure cap tester will usually have an attachment for pressurizing the cooling system. It has a small hand pump and a plug you put on the expansion tank where the cap is. You pump it up to 15 psi, and see if you can hear any leaking air or see any leaking coolant.
If you can't get one of those, take off the overflow hose that runs from the radiator to the coolant tank. This is the small hose (3/16 inner diameter). Plug the radiator nipple and use a bicycle pump to pressurize the expansion tank. Again listen for leaking air or look for coolant loss.
