I am no expert. As far as self-interest, I actually make money when people get hurt so I have no vested interest in discouraging people from using the Wal-Mart hose. That said, I have heard second hand of circumstances where overcharged ac systems have caused parts to blow off. It never happened to me, thankfully, but I also keep a close eye on the high side. My point was if you can't see the high side, you have no idea what's going on. If you don't know what's going on in a system where pressures can quickly build over 500 psi, you are asking for trouble. When you consider that the alternative is an investment of $125 (vs. $25), it seems like a no-brainer to me.
