Kappy,
All A/C systems have high limit safety switches, and pressure
is rather unlikely to build to 500 PSI faster than the limit
switch can cut out the system - in fact, many systems have a
limit switch that moderates cooling by the high side pressure.
Many, if not all, now also have blowout plugs to prevent the
very accident you mentioned.
That having been said - I am not 100% in favor of the cheapo
gauges myself - but I have tested just one against my 'real'
gauges - and it was nearly dead on.
My protest is against the notion of telling what appears to
be a very competent group of people something to frighten
them away from a procedure that only requires a little bit
of education and a common-sense approach to safety.
BTW - all the 'older' Freons had a most dangerous part of
their abilities - if you heated them in the presence of
plain old water - say by a propane torch - you would make
a deadly gas, the name of which escapes me right now.
How many folks sweating A/C joints may have learned this
one the hard way ???
