Just last fall, I had an obstruction in the condensor inlet tube. The obstruction developed as I was charging. High limit is supposed to be around 380, but the limit swtich is on the receiver drier which is after the condensor. Since the obstruction was before the condensor, the limit switch never saw the compressor outlet pressure. The blow off valve is suppossed to let go at 425, and didn't. My high side gauge pegged at 500 before I was able to switch off the compressor.

The point is that since I was able to see high side pressure while I was charging, I knew there was a problem developing and was able to respond before it reached critical mass. If I had been using a charging hose with no gauge, I would have had no way of knowing what was happening. That prospect scares me, and I am no alarmist.

When I started down the AC road, I bought an Interdynamics gauge which is basically a low side charging hose with a gauge that screws into the end instead of the can tap. This gauge also came with an adapter to fit onto the high side service port. The gauge is accurate in reading, but has 2 problems. First, you can't see any pressure while you are charging. Second, the high side adapter is not substantial enough to fit onto a high side port until the system has returned to static pressure. This makes the gauge fairly useless, particulary if you are doing charging by pressure, which is the preferred method for retrofit. I also broke the valve core in the high side port the first time I tried to force it onto the a high side port. The gauge came with essentially no instructions.

The other thing about r134a is that operating pressures are a lot higher than the old r12 systems. With r12, 150 would be the high end for high side pressure. My Chrysler minivan has a normal range high side pressure of 300.

If my comments (and experiences) scare anyone into taking the time to know what they are doing with a/c before they do it, and use minimally acceptable equipment, I offer no apology.

Finally, the posion gas you are thinking of is phosgene, and I have been under the impression that r134a has a similar characteristic, though the specific gas produced may be different. I am not certain about this.
