The O2 sensor output should swing between 0.2 volts and 0.9 volts, crossing 0.5 volts about 1/second. The sensor output at 0.2 volts is lean, and at 0.9 volts is rich. The fuel control swings the mixture from slightly lean to slightly rich and back again so that the catalytic converter works properly.

The O2 sensor only goes down to about 0.2 volts. That's slightly lean. The tough part is that lean is still 0.2, and very lean is 0.2. So once you hit 0.2, you don't know how lean you're running.

The screw you want to adjust is the one in the side of the AMM.

The 0.2 volt output, along with the color of the plugs (white/yellow) indicate lean running. Before adjusting the AMM, make sure you've got every vacuum leak chased down, and that the timing is exactly right. If the plugs are old, replace them, and if they're not the heat range specified in the manual, use the proper heat range.

How can the engine run lean but still have lousy gas mileage? Easy. If the engine is running lean, it isn't producing as much power as it would when running right. You'll be more prone to knock, which robs power. Knock will also cut back on boost.

If the performance of the engine is down, you'll hit the gas pedal harder to get the ooomph you're looking for. Running a little lean may save a little gas, but it's more than made up for by opening the throttle that much more. If you have to really nail the throttle to get performance, you may be injecting more fuel, but the excess of air means lousy power.

If you're running really rich, you'll see fluffy black plugs. Running really rich can cost a couple/three MPG. Even a slightly heavier foot can easily cost 3-5 MPG, and if you really have to boot the throttle, you can easily get a 5-10 MPG hit.

Find out why you're running lean and fix that. I'll bet the performance comes back along with gas mileage.

Good luck!
