Many thanks again for the advice Ari.
I've had many vehicles with vacuum servo assist and this peculiar event stumped me completely. It was even more confusing this morning. I went and fiddled with the servo vaccum pipe again and then tried to drive - no brakes at all!. Twice I adjusted the pipe, twice the brakes got worse. Suddenly realised it didn't make sense because no suction would mean a hard pedal - clearly there was suction.
After a lot of head scratching the best approach seemed to be to go formal and check everything. It turned out fluid was empty. The fluid reservoir innards were dirty and made it look like it was full also the dirt had stopped the low fluid switch from moving. The increased vacuum from fixing the pipes had drawn in the last of the fluid and a gloop of air. The first start of the morning (and it was a cold summer morning here in Western Australia) drew even more air. Hence soggy pedal and no brakes. Next time I'll look for first hand evidence rather than relying on the sensors!
Best regards and thanks,
Terry
