Thanks Ari. I refocused my efforts on the leaks and went over the potential areas for leaks into the manifold with a home made tester consiting of the cruise control pump (wired direct to the battery), the 'T' joiner from the hooter valve, and a vacuum gauge. Found the hooter valve itself is leaking along with a seal at rear of manifold and (possibly) the seal to the brake servo cylinder. Combination of crimping vacuum hose to hooter and resetting AMM temporarily to 380ohms (was 850ohm) made significant difference to engine performance. Will reset properly when I have all the bits to fix the leaks.
The really puzzling part is the change in the brake pedal. Before doing these last checks, the brakes were very hard and not particularly effective. Its been that way since I got the car. Suddenly, after doing the work on the vaccum pipes, the pedal action is really soft - almost right down to the floor before anything happens (can touch the floor with a heavy push). Braking still works but not as strongly as I would expect from the hardware.
The braking system is the simple vacuum assisted servo. I'm at a loss to see what I could have done to cause such a dramatic change. Any ideas?
Best wishes,
Terry
