The non-ABS cars do have the simple vacuum brake booster. About all I can figure is that you're no longer getting the vacuum assist.
I'll have to say I'm unfamiliar with the vacuum assist system. At a minimum it has to have at least one One-Way valve, otherwise turbo boost would pressurize the system, a bad thing. There may even be an accumulator. I would go over the pressure hoses very carefull, making sure that the hose to the brake booster is going where it should be, and that any one-way valves are still truly one-way. Other than that, I can't really help. Sorry.
