Torque limiting Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Does 9000 Aero (automatic) have 200 HP or 225 HP?, zeke, Fri, 20 Jun 2003 04:43:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
As I understand, automatic equipped cars were all limited to 200 HP. I believe I heard this from John Moss (Saab head of training) during a transmission seminar. It had to do with trying to keep the transmissions in one piece.
The difference between 222 or 217 ft-lbs isn't the difference in life of the transmission. The early 2.0l turbo cars only had 166 hp (and I believe around 160 ft-lbs torque) and they still ate transmissions about every 100K miles.
There probably are 100K+ autotranny cars with beefed up motors. However, when Saab designed the car, they knew that the ZF can't take too much power and stay reliable. Heck, it couldn't take stock power and stay reliable. In order to keep warranty costs down they limited engine torque on automatic tranny cars.
My personal opinion - the autobox was never very strong on the 9000, and I've seen no evidence that it got any stronger in later years. Increasing the horsepower of the engine will not improve reliability. How much will be lost? I don't know. Going for more power that the car came stock with is a personal choice. However, I don't believe anyone can say that increasing power will not adversely impact longevity and reliability.
