Saab has been trying to tame the torque of the automatics and cars in general with traction control and reduced power in lower gears for safety concerns. A 200HP auto will sqall it's tires long before full throttle, especially when turning. The 2.3 times torque miltiplication of the converter can really surprise the unwary. It's interesting that Saab had an opportunity to put the AW tranny in the 9000 in 94, why didn't they?? The ZF tranny isn't all that much worse, if any, than the run of the mill auto. Just visit a tranny repair shop and listen to their stories about <100K mile failures, they love em.
