About a month ago similar situation happened to me. I was coming home from work when there was a guy in my lane. The insurance company totalled it sadly. It "was" a 97 aero.
As for a rental, talk to your insurance company, if it is in your policy, they should be able to set it all up for you. My policy gives me a certain amount per day, anything over and above i want to spend to get a car comparable to my saab - comes out of my pocket.
To determine the amount of the car, my insurance company uses market value. They determined a price, which I thought could be higher. I went on the saabnet classifieds, autotrader and NADA to get prices for my car and faxed all that over to them. I am currently waiting to see if this helped.
Good luck with everything - at least you are ok.
