Hi FreddyB. A few years ago, I briefly worked for a rental company in the Twin Cities. We dealt with this a number of times. If your car is getting repaired, the other person's insurance should pick up the tab for the rental (considering that the body shop doesn't take overly long to complete the work). It was their fault that you got hit, so it should be on their tab. If they total the car, they should provide a rental for a couple weeks to allow you to find a new/used car to replace your beloved 9000.
Here's the key: the rental agency will try to stick you into a smaller car (Pontiac Sunfire, Chevy Cavalier, Toyota Corolla, etc.). See if the rental car company can get a larger car approved. Since you were driving a midsize car, you should get a midsize (Oldsmobile Alero, Chevy Malibu, etc.) while yours is being worked on or replaced. They won't do it 100% of the time, but they'll usually try to help you out.
If you need any other tips for the rental, post a message and I'll try to help out as much as possible.
