Strange tire wear on rear wheels

My '86 9000 turbo (manual trans) has been developing of late a pretty good shake when driving at interstate speeds.
It's probably not noticable when just driving around town, and seems to feel like it's coming from the rear wheels. I inspected the rear tires and found a rather unusual, undulating wear patter that's been developing. It's been steadily getting worse and worse. The pictures below were snapped today. These are both pictures of the (U.S.) passenger side rear tire. The driver's side has a similar wear pattern, but not quite as pronounced. The front tires seem to be fine, and wearing evenly.
Has anyone seen wear like this before? I'm guessing something's f'd up somewhere, probably a hosed bushing or mount in the rear linkage. I haven't gotten under the car to check this out yet, but is there a way to test for bad bushings, or should it just be obvious from looking at them?
I've also bought a new pair of shocks for the rear. I just figured it was about time to replace those.
Anyone have similar experience, tips. comments?
