Changed my thermostat today - solved similar problem!

Had low coolant temp gauge since I bought the car 2 months ago, and as ambient temperatures dropped so did my gauge (to about 7 o'clock). Only in stop and go traffic it rose to 9-10 o'clock,
So today I changed the t-stat with an original one from the saab dealer.
No need to remove throttle housing, just loosened the hoses on it, pushed them a little and that gave me enough working space. Job took me about 1 hour.
Had been wondering if the t-stat was a 82 degree one, but what I found was a 89 degree t-stat stuck half open.
Gauge is now steady at 9 o'clock and I have more cabin heat. More stable temperature must be better for the engine and the quicker warm up should improve economy..
Error code has not come back (had 4 flashes of "check engine") - see my previous posting at

So I agree :
Step 1 Change the thermostat!
