Both of my 9000's (96 & 97) have 82 degree thermostats. Now cooler weather is here the the gauges like to be in the 8:00 range and never get horizonal even in hot weather. Interesting things do happen, like on identical 200+ mile trips a few days apart the gauge is barely 8:00 with upper 50's ambient and between 8:00 and 9:00 with mid 30's ambient. A little over correction of the gauge for ambient temp! There's reason to believe a 82 degree stat is to cool for later 9000's that have the radiator fan controlled by the EDU. The EDU operates the fan over a much narrower temp range which keeps the engine temp under control even in traffic on a 90 degree day with A/C off. Also these models seem to have better airflow - cooling. Monitoring engine temp with an OBDII reader, indicated about 176 degree max coolant temp for the 6 mile run to and from work. A bit low for a 82 degree stat but reasonable for one cracking open early in cool weather. The low temp gauge and OBDII readings stongely imply these cars are better off with a 89 degree thermostat. The higher temp helps drive moisture out of the engine and maintain a reasonable temps in cool weather. With a 89 degree stat the temp gauge stays closer to horizonal except in the coldest weather.
