when the temp gets above single digits. Meanwhile, I'll order one or two transistors. The heater core has never leaked (thanks to Barrs?) and the fan sounds smooth and normal when on, so I will try to avoid fan replacement just now. It is obvious how a shorted transistor could make the fan run full speed only, or an open one make it not run at all, but can anyone explain the theory behind the "on or off" behavior that has replaced the continuous analog control --- and how a bad transistor could cause it? Is there some form of positive feedback involved? Has anyone found a more robust Darlington than the Toshiba 2SD1525?
