I too have both cars, a 1995 9000 Aero (5-sp) and a 2003 9-5 Aero (auto). The 9-5 Aero is my wife's car that replaced a 1992 9000S but I drive both cars often.
The essential thing to remember is that they are essentially different cars. I think the difference between a 9000 and a 9-5 is much more than between a 9000 and a 900. You should try on a 9-5 and see how you like it. Like you, initially I was a bit luke warm to the 9-5, even in Aero form. The more I drive it, the more I like it for everyday use. Yes, it looks and feels more generic but it is a much better all around car.
Your question comes up frequent enough, you may want to do a search at the 9-5BB as well.
