Thanks for all your kind advice. I didn't plan on teaching him on the saab, but the old volvo that I bought for this purpose is not quite ready. (Actually, he shifted it so hard the first time out that the upper mount sheared off on the Volvo and I had to replace it).
I thought the extra power on the Saab might make it easier to learn because the car wouldn't stall so easily. I hope to have the volvo (n/a) out of the garage later this week. BTW, I learned to shift on a VW Beetle that my high school had just for that purpose back in the 1970s. Now the schools don't even have a driver's ed. program.
