Two reasons- Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: But why???, Daven ![]() |
The first reason was given by jj- Boost is reduced when knock is detected. That is the primary way to prevent knock in the '92; the other way is via ignition retardation. Knock can occur very quickly at high boost, and under those conditions, detonation will punch a hole through the cylinder top in very little time. This can be knock you won't hear.
Second - the engine and drivetrain was designed for a set amount of power. Run with more power, and you're stressing the the system. You're generating a lot more heat with high power, and that can cause hot spots. Unless the fuel system has been modified to keep up, you're probably running a little lean at the abnormally high boost, which will not only promote knock and make the engine run hotter, can actually melt some interior components. The tranny and running gear weren't designed for that power.
It's not like Saab designed a 250 hp car, and then dialed back the power just because they don't want you to have fun. Saab designed all the bits in the system to meet certain longevity at the 'normal' engine power. Is there some margin? Yes, some. However, as you dial up the power, the longevity goes down. Add in that you have a 12 year old car - that ain't no spring chicken, and things like the cooling system aren't in as great shape as when they left the factory.
Can you dial the power up? Sure thing - it's your car, enjoy. If you want to do it right, you need to make some other changes, such as increasing fuel flow (FPR) to keep up. And I'd want to make sure everything else in the car is in tip-top shape, such as the cooling system. And with all that, you will be reducing the life of the car. Nothing wrong with that - you own it. Just don't think you're getting something for nothing.
