"Spontaneous" loss of coolant ... uh-oh...

In my mother's 95 9000CS, I was driving home the other night in the rain, and about 2 minutes from home, I noticed the temperature guage was just at the bottom of the red. I was alarmed, and then the guage dropped to the absolute bottom, as if the car were off. Then back up. I pulled into the driveway and the car sat with the fan running for a while. I could smell coolant.
The next morning, my father and I inspected the car and noticed that the coolant reservoir was almost empty (but that there was still coolant in the rest of the system). We also thought we noticed a dripping leak down where the bottom hose from the radiator (on the passenger side) connected to the engine. It could have been from us putting more water in the reservoir, but it was anti-freeze colored, so I suspect not.
I am pretty sure it lost it rapidly, as in that day, and not over the course of weeks, since I had the hood open last weekend and would have noticed if the reservoir was low/empty.
I got no radiator level warning light, no change in how the engine ran, etc. My father and I hypothesized the thermostat or the water pump. The water pump was replaced about 15,000 miles ago, although I know that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
What is the most likely culprit? What should we start looking for?
(Now that the new-used-car grace period is over, maybe we'll finally have to start delving into the mechanics of the 9000...)
TIA,
Tim B.
