Determining TDC with head off

Dear engine rebuild gurus,
1995 9000 Aero 5 speed w/ 173K miles...
I am halfway through a head gasket replacement in my driveway. I aligned the cam timing marks and had N0. 1 piston at TDC and removed the head.
I cleaned the piston crowns of Cyl. 1 and 4 and then rotated the engine 90 degrees and cleaned pistons 2 and 3. I then turned the engine another 90 degrees so that No. 1 and 4 are again at deck height. My problem is that I have to turn the engine 180 degrees back to TDC and I would like to verify that the engine IS at TDC. But the timing marks and flywheel are completely concealed in the bell housing.
1: Is there any access to the timing marks?
2: Could I re-attach the DI cassette with a spark plug in No.1 cyl and turn engine by hand until spark plug fires (just before TDC)? I would pull the fuel pump fuse to avoid spraying the world with gas.
3: Any other options to verify TDC?
Thanks so much!!
