There have been multiple discussions about this particular topic on this board -- students thinking about getting a 9000 for college, but having no previous experience turning a wrench, and no money to spare.

Saabs are terrific cars, but the 9000 is not inexpensive to run. Particularly in Aero form, they are performance vehicles, and it's to be expected that maintenance costs will run higher.

I'd really advise you to buy a used Honda, Toyota, Nissan or Subaru for now. Just change the fluids on time, and they'll run forever. If you want a real cheapie, look at a used Ford Taurus, but don't expect much from the car. I really suggest one of the Japanese brands.

If you're lucky, maybe you could find a nice, low-mileage Sentra SE-R (made from '91 - '94) -- AWESOME cars. I had one of these before buying my '93 Aero. A blast to drive (7,500 RPM redline, Car & Driver 10 Best car every year it was offered), and I literally couldn't kill mine. Less practical, because it's a two-door, and the rear seat doesn't fold down. Unbeatable, otherwise, for reliability and all-around driving fun. Things to watch out for: 5th gear popping out = don't buy. Stay away from cars with mods. Lower-mileage versions are preferable. Starters eventually wear out (not tough to replace). Valve cover gaskets eventually go, but VERY easy to replace.

Hope this helps. I'm sure I've opened up a huge can of car-debate worms, but I really think this is the best route for a student.
