Thanks for all the suggestions. I finally traced the problem to the voltage regulator. Pulled it out and the carbon brushes were completely worn out. Installed new VR - everything runs fine and EDU shows 13.5V while driving. I believe the sudden blackout and voltage drop was that the brushes were making intermittent contact inside the alternator, suddenly loading the system and causing relays to momentarily disengage and blank the lights and radio.
