I wouldn't worry too much about the under 10V at starting thing. Mine routinely drops to 9.6-9.9 right after starting, and likes to hang around 13.5 during driving conditions. When you see it dip below 9.4 volts at startup, it may be time to look into the situation.
Also, I have had two alternator replacements. If there is a serious problem with charging, you'll notice some things like the engine cranking longer at startup, and the power locks working in what seems like slow motion.
Also, I was reading up on this when I had my last alternator problem, and the one thing that I definitely got out of it was that every vehicle has its own characteristics, and there is a wide range of "acceptable" voltages both after start up and while running. So, get to know what is normal for your 9000 and when out of that range, start looking into it. Unfortunately, it takes one or two failures to figure out what isn't normal.
