Questions about alternator and charging voltage

I have a 9000 CS auto with 122K miles on it, and the voltage in the instrument cluster had been reading around 13.2-13.3 Volts, occasionally it would read 13.8-13.9Volts. Well, after searching here online, I decided that it was probably my voltage regulator, but I decided to get a reman'd alternator instead of just the regulator. I replace the alternator last night, and everything went great (although it is tight in there!). But now, after replacing the alternator, the voltage seems to be about the same. It occasionally goes to 14V-13.8 Volts, but seems to stay around the 13.2-13.3 volts range. I also replace the positive battery cable as the orginal one's protective covering was cracked and breaking off. I made sure to tighten all of the nuts down on all the connections.

Could an old/dying battery cause this low voltage? I bought this car a few months ago and I don't know how old the battery is. I could just go out and replace it to be on the safe side, but I would like to try to understand whats going on. I always thought that a good charging system should be around 13.6 to 14volts. Also, how does the alternator get a good ground connection? All I remember was a really thick red wire to the back of the alternator and a small wire the seem'd to be the ground connection. Does the alternator get ground through the engine/block/chassis?

One last question. My reman'd alternator did not come with the capacitor that was on the back of my old alternator. I took the cap off of tge old one and onto the reman'd part. Could this cap go bad cause a low voltage situation?
