$8,000 daily driver - late 900, late 9000 or early 9-3?

I plan to look for a dependable daily driver for around $8k (or less). Looks like later ('96-'98) 900s and 9000s fall into this price range as well as early '99-'00 9-3s.
Which would you recommend for maint costs and reputation? I know the 9000 Aeros are very roomy fast, while the 900s are alot easier to find especially here in AZ where Saabs aren't often seen.
Am I better off with a LPT or HPT model?
Should I stay away from automatic transmissions?
FWIW, I do have a quality indy Saab mechanic to go to. I've always kinda liked the 9000s but wonder if at this age they are likely to be a money pit. Or am I better off with a 9-3 that is 2-3 years newer?
Thanks!
