I think I used bad terminology in my original post. The tapping sound I described is really more of a Ticking sound and it's coming from behind the block, not out the top of it.
The ticking sound never stops. I do have lifter noise on cold mornings but that goes away, this is different. I'm not having TCS issues, plugs are 1mm. (Thanks Peter for the ideas)
Using Ron J's stethoscope method I've listened to the motor (cool idea, works well). There are swishing sounds from the timing cover area and everywhere else around the accessory side.
I found the ticking noise comes from near the injectors. Do they make a difference in idle quality? I should do Techron again probably, it's been almost 10 months.
Does the ticking noise near the injectors ring any bells with anyone? It may not even be related to the idle problem, I'm just wondering.
It seems from searching the archives that some Aero's have a lumpy idle that people have spent a lot of time and energy trying to eliminate (Thanks LDH) but their cars are running great in the meanwhile. That's how I feel, she's never been faster but could be a bit smoother when I'm sitting at a light.
