I've been working on this for a while, and want to thank everyone who has helped so far.
The car is an 88 9000 turbo, and I have the hard brake pedal problem. Fault tracing thus far led to the ABS pump, which I replaced, as well as some wiring that was severely corroded.
What happens now: when I turned the ignition switch to "ON" (not "RUN"), both the ABS and Brake Fluid lights come on. The pump runs (Yay!), but the fluid level doesn't drop--doesn't move at all. The pump will continue to run until I turn off the ignition switch (which I always do after about 45"--don't want to burn out this pump!)
From research on the board (see link to a post of Ari's below), it looks as if this is the classic symptom of a failed accumulator. In other words, the low pressure switch (less than 140 bar) senses a "pump on" condition. The pump runs, and since the accumulator cannot hold anything, the pressure never increases, so the pump keeps running.
I have an extra hydraulic assembly that donated the ABS pump and accumulator. It looks as if I'll have to put the OLD accumulator back on--I don't think it was the cause of my problem to begin with.
A few questions:
1--Is there anyway I can test the old accumulator to make sure it is still good?
2--Can I replace JUST the accumulator, if necessary?
3--Is it possible that a switch is bad (either low or high pressure)?
4--After replacing ABS hydraulic components, is there any bleeding of the system necessary in order for things to work correctly? This would be the easiest way, but I sorta doubt it.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks.
