Yes, usually starts with clicking, predominately
when you turn a particular direction. The clicking can
be like valve clicking noise - but a bit more immediate
and metalic sounding, or little thunky. They may also clunk or
vibrate on accelleration. Check the boots - if any of these rubber boots
the one on wheel side (outer cv),
or the one on transaxel side (inner side)
are damaged,
then that's a bad sign - usually accompanied by a grease
leak from that boot. Don't get mixed up on the inner side, there are also boots near there on the steering assembly. (they could also be misalligned) If you rotate the axel shaft and feel a difference in
the feel of the shaft as you do so that's bad. These things usually deteriorate slowly and don't present as much of a danger as
bad ball joints do. If you pull the cv's and look at them,
a seriously bad one will look bad - it will have pitted bearings
and often gritty grease. Replacing them is not too bad -
inners may require attention to transaxel fluid, and outers require
pulling hubs and disconnecting brakes. BTW - Goldwing and
Eeuroparts (used division) often sell comple half axles
that they have checked out that are easier to install than an
individual set of cv's.
Either way you need to get under the car and look at things.
If the ball joints are sloppy, they defininately need replacement,
they break suddenly, unexpectedly and disasterously. You do not
want them to fail while you are driving.
I think you should probably do some exploratory surgery
and see if you can spot anything ovious that we have talked about.
