...and bear in mind that in my family our 92 9000S occupies a rare place in the considerably long list of Saabs we've had! Rebuilt the engine two years ago after the obligatory timing chain failure, did EVERYTHING!!! And the darn clutch (drat those aftermarket parts) is the only thing even slightly imperfect on this car.

At 130,000 miles in this condition I wouldn't be willing to shell out $1500 for someone else's twin of it. Why? Because in my Connecticut neighborhood I know if I bide my time someone will be panic-selling their very nice 93 CSE turbo, fully loaded with minor repairs required, for $2000 or less (my last two cost me $1000 each, say $2500 after DIY repairs).

I don't know that noise is a reliable arbiter of impending doom, and that applies to both the timing chains and transmissions. If you're grinding under studly shifting maneuvers, that's maybe standard 9000 for you. Especially into first gear. Passing into second and hearing the gnashing of teeth really means you should give an old car a bit more time, or else you'll start hearing that gnashing a lot more often. Wouldn't really have anything to do with engine mounts, or SHOULDN'T. Mostly what you'd see is lots of driveline lash and/or waggly shifter, maybe a tendency to pop out of gear.

On timing chains, for the last year or so I've been counseling "assume the best," primarily because the infamous early 2.3s are getting older and less valuable, perhaps not worth the expense of preemptive surgery any more.

Hope that helps, and please restrain the rotten-tomato-throwing, fellow Saabists. I am still a true believer -- a true believer in the insanely ridiculous deals that Saabs are!
