doing balancer chain - have damaged the head gasket

Hi from UK! This site really is good. It's helped me get down to seeing my balance chain sprockets on my '92 9k 2.3T. The engine one has lost about half its teeth. All the rest of the spockets look pretty OK at first view. I have yet to take these off and decide which to replace - though I shall err on the side of replacement.
My question: In taking the timing cover off the head gasket broke - about along the join with the head. Is it possible to put it back together using modern sealants (e.g. by leaving the gasket that's stuck to the timing cover) and expect to have an oiltight seal, or is it a head off job (jobs do tend to grow and grow....)?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
