You have a 92. That's TWELVE YEARS on the original headgasket. I would just go ahead and replace it, especially since the one already there is damaged. The gasket itself is fairly cheap ($15 US!), so I don't really see the point in trying to save the old one.
One other thing to consider/check/possibly replace (caveat: I've never done a HG job of any kind, and am only chiming in with my opinion based on what I've read here), is the the timing chain and sprockets. The reason is because now that you've done the "hard part" of removing the head, it is SO worth your while to "take care of it" now.
Especially so since you're doing the work yourself--your only expenses will be parts. Congrats on taking the plunge into the internals of your engine! I'll probably be following suit on my 88 turbo over the summer.
