i'd go with non-turbo, all my saabs have been non-turbos and they've been fine. my first was an 86 900S hatchback, black, by far the classiest and sexiest of my saabs and a great car and if you got her one, any color, that would carry her through high school into college and beyond. all the saab mechs seem to drive them and recommend them over the 9000s and all the wrecked saab stories on the saabnet site seem to be 900s. if you get the hatchback she'll have style and she can do roadtrips and sleep in the back, later, when she's allowed to...
plus her saab would be different than your saab model, so she's have some individuality
sunroof is key...
only the 900S seemed a little sluggish getting onto highway, and it was a 5 spd, but i didn't do a thing to the engine, no plugs, nothing, i just bought it from the original owner and drove it (only did clutch stuff, alternator, and brakes). i miss that car tremendously and may buy one someday again.
my 9000s 90, 92, and 93 auto are all non-turbo and the 5 spds are quick, especially with new di's, before that, with dirty air filters, and old plugs, they aren't so great. my auto is fine, especially at highway speeds.
she may seem to be a calm driver, but as we all know, what we do when parents aren't around is a different story.
my first car was my 69 442 conv, and when i picked up from having the engine rebuilt, and drove it for the first time by myself, i lit up the tires for a block, by accident, i didn't have the presence of mind to let up on the gas, and that was just the beginning ;)
i wouldn't change my past for a second, but if i have kids, i won't give them that kind of power to play around with, too tempting, boy or girl.
so i'd pass on the turbo, more stuff to take time away from life if it starts to malfunction (like TCS)
volvo station wagon would be my next bet, especially if you want an automatic, the old 240 DL wagons are cool, a little stiff maybe, but run forever and ever and ever, and i think the automatics are supposed to be a bit more reliable than saab, and they still get great gas mileage and are crash safe, and make a cool car for all ages. my neighbor has two 740 wagons, the older one (pre-ford) has 285K on it, and he's just done usual maintenace, changed belt/chain as recommended, and brakes.
good luck
