did you check the tranmission oil level? wouldn't it be great if the oil is low, and topping it off makes all well again.
I think youy could sell the car for ~$500 as is, with the buyer aware of possible transmission trouble. If the trans was fine, you could sell it for about $1500. Your break even point (ignoring the cost of the hassle and effort) is $1000, there abouts.
But what if you put $2000 into it. How does that compare with what else you could buy for $2k? That's the real way to look at the question. For $2K you should be able to get a similar 9000, slightly newer, with the 2.3L engine. But then you'd have the TCS threat (92-95), which can generate all its own costly problems (and it won't help you in the snow either!).
I suggest you check the oil, drive the car as long as you can, keep an eye out for a replacement, or a cheap used transmission.
