A 1990 9KT, though a nice car, isn't worth much in the marketplace. I wouldn't rule out another coupla years on the thing just because it makes noise, either. But assuming you're left one day to ride home on mooseback, I think it's folly to put big bucks into your car at this point. You might fix the transmission, only to have some other 15-year-old part snuff it.
Since 9000s are probably rare up there, and maybe expensive, you can be forgiven if you stray to another manufacturer. Perhaps you would find a newer one at a reasonable cost when the day comes. But you may have no reason to for a good while.
