Ian--
I'm sure the long narrow sea kayak makes a big difference, especially flat on the rack. The J-Bars I have work great--I can get three boats on the car with one flat between the J's--but with 2 the angle and the drag from the less streamlined hulls (and 2 boats!) doesn't help. Amazing what a difference aerodynamics makes! Still, getting 24 mpg at 70 isn't bad, compared to 31-32 with no roof load.
Interestingly, the mileage drop on my wife's Exploder with the same roof load is much less. That beast gets 19-20 on the highway with nothing on top at 70. Add two yaks and a sailboard and a week's worth of stuff for 4 people and it gets 16.
