Having recently gone through auto to 5 speed conversion on a 94 cde, I can tell you replacing the drive axle is much much easier than a messy CV joint job. I had to remove the drive shaft because the 5 speed transmission I got is from a LPT. It has smaller drive flanges (cups).
Anyway, you need to remove the axle nut. So a proper tool is essential. I'd recommend a 3/4" drive metric wrench set. You need the 32mm socket. You can get it on ebay quite inexpensively. It is made in you know where.
1. loosen the axle nut,
2. loosen wheel lugs, raise front wheel,
3. remove front wheel,
4. remove two bolts connecting the strut to the steering knuckle,
5. loosen the inner drive boot strap, pull the drive shaft out,
6. loosen the axle nut flush with the end of the axle, use a 5 lb hammer to bang the end of the axle in to loosen it and remove.
Installation is the reverse.
